Abstract

Polyamide fibres or threads are modified by treatment with a carboxylic acid chloride in a swelling agent which is dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide or pyridine and in the presence of a basic catalyst. When pyridine is used it may function both as swelling agent and as basic catalyst. The treatment is stated to acylate the peptide groups as well as the terminal NH2 groups of synthetic polyamides, e.g. polycaprolactam. Specified acid chlorides are stearoyl, benzoyl, phthaloyl, acetyl and nitrobenzoyl. Specified basic catalysts are sodium carbonate and hydroxide and t.-amines.
