Abstract

Liquid polymer-forming reactants tending to form a residue on reactor walls, e.g. hexamethylene diammonium adipate solution for nylon formation, are charged into an autoclave for subsequent heating, by spraying at least in part outwardly against the inner walls of said autoclave, to flush away residues from preceding batches. The apparatus comprises an upright vessel (10) having shoulder and neck portions (21, 19), a valved outlet (34) in the lower portion and a valved inlet (24) which has a plurality of discharge holes (42) discharging upwardly and outwardly toward said shoulder and neck portions. The numerals refer to the embodiment of Fig. 1 (not shown) in which the vessel is surrounded by a heating jacket 12 and has an inlet 28 for delusterant, an outlet 50 for venting steam and an inlet 48 leading to the feed line 24 for admission of a pressurised inert gas. The feed line 24 has further discharge holes 44 directed into the neck 23, and holes 46 in the end cap 40. Fig. 4 (not shown) further comprises a screw agitator 56 and a horizontal part circular perforated conduit 62 attached to the inlet for spraying the reactants.
