Abstract

Calcium hydrogen phosphate is precipitated from an acid solution of calcium dihydrogen phosphate in the presence of nitrate ions by heating the solution to a temperature between 60 DEG C. and the boiling point of the solution, and the crystals separated by hot filtration. The nitrate ions may be added as nitric acid or calcium nitrate, in concentrations between 0.004 and 0.2 molar. The concentration of the initial solution calculated as H3PO4 is preferably between 0.4 and 0.7 molar, or between 0.4 and 1.3 molar in the presence of a nucleating agent such as a water-soluble alcohol. 5 to 60% ethanol may be used. The solution may be formed by mixing a soluble calcium salt, particularly the nitrate, with phosphoric acid solution. The product has a narrow particle size range, viz. 9 to 32 microns, suitable for the preparation of phosphors.
