[Also in Division G2] In a screw-and-nut device for accurately positioning a linearlymovable plane mirror 17 of an optical interferometer, for coarse adjustment the screw 1, connected to the mirror by a ball 20 and a member 19, is rotated alone, e.g. manually, the axially located nut 4 being held stationary, while for fine adjustment, a motor 13 and an electromagnetic clutch 12 are energized to rotate the screw and the nut in the same sense but at slightly different speeds. Using a standard micrometer screw, axial location to, e.g., 0.1 micron may be achieved. An idler shaft 10, connected to the nut 4 by meshing gears 9, 7, and to the screw 1 by the clutch 12 and gears 8, 6, is driven from the motor 13 through reduction gearing 14 and pick-off gears 15, 16.
