Abstract

A fabric exhibiting a seer sucker or other effect is produced by applying to a part only of the area of a fabric containing at least 25% by weight of polyacrylonitrile fibres a printing paste which contains a cyanoalkyl amide, e.g. bis-cyano ethyl formamide, the proportion of cyano alkyl amide in the paste and the quantity p of the paste applied to the fabric being so related as to result in 10-60% by weight of the amide based on the total weight of the fabric being applied to the printed areas of the fabric and then exposing the printed areas to steam for a time sufficient to allow the printed areas to shrink. The fibres are made from homopolymers of acrylonitrile or copolymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile with other monomers, e.g. styrene, methyl acrylate, itaconic acid, methallyl sulphonic acid or its salts, vinyl acetate or vinyl pyridine. The fabric treated is preferably of relative open construction, e.g. one having a cover factor of the order of 10 units. The printing paste, which may also contain Nafka crystal gum (the word Nafka is a Trade Mark), may be applied in the form of stripes, a check pattern or circular areas displaced regularly or randomly over the fabric. The fabric may be steamed for 5-60 minutes to allow the treated areas to shrink by 10-20%. The fabrics may then be scoured, subjected to a relaxing treatment, e.g. in boiling water, and treated with a softening agent. A printing to colour the fabric may be carried out simultaneously with the application of the amide or as a second operation which may precede the steaming operation.
