Abstract

Fibrous materials of cellulose, which may be mixed with other natural or man-made fibres, are simultaneously coloured and finished by treatment with (a) compounds which improve crease resistance, (b) copolymers of 1-25% of an N-methylolamide of an acrylic acid, and 99-75% of one or more other polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compounds, and (c) a dyestuff capable of forming a covalent linkage with the substance of the fibre. The process may be combined with a mechanical finishing operation, e.g. embossing, fluting or calendering, by subjecting the dried fabric to mechanical treatment at 140-200 DEG C. at pressures of 10-30 metric tons. The dyes (c) may be from the anthraquinone, azo, disazo, methine, azoporphin, oxazine and thiazine series, are preferably water-soluble and contain a reactive group, many of which are specified. Suitable dyes also include those containing methylol or etherified methylol groups preferably attached by way of nitrogen and which are applied together with an acid donor. Suitable components (a) are described in Specifications 882,743 and 916,698 and are especially the methylol compounds of glyoxalmonoureine, glyoxaldidureine, butanediol-diurethane and the alkyl derivatives of the triazinones. The copolymers (b) are prepared from monomer mixtures containing especially N-methylol acrylamide or N-methylolmethacrylamide and methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl acrylate by the method described in German Specification 1,047,431. Further copolymers are described in Specifications 882,743 and 916,698. The process may be effected by applying to the material an aqueous bath or printing paste containing (a), (b), (c), about 60-96% water and any other desired auxiliaries, thereafter drying at 80-160 DEG C., optionally mechanically finishing and thermofixing at 130-200 DEG C. No rinsing step is required. Specified fibrous materials are cotton, linen and viscose staple which may be mixed with wool, polyacrylonitrile and/or polyamide fibres. Examples are given. Specifications 846,505, 858,183 and 916,697 also are referred to.
