Abstract

An alloy containing 7-20% Al, 12-16% C, and the balance of B, is prepared by heating powdered boron carbide and Al in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of at least 1000 DEG C., preferably 1400-1500 DEG C., and at atmospheric pressure. The boron carbide may have a formula from B2.65 C to B5 C, and the Al preferably has an oxide content below 5%. The amount of Al used may be 2-3 times that required, and the product may be leached with mineral acid, e.g. HCl, to remove excess Al, and any Al carbide. The inert atmosphere may be a current of H2 or Ar, and should not contain CO.ALSO:A compound containing 7-20% Al, 12-16% C, and the balance of B, is prepared by heating powdered boron carbide and Al in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of at least 1000 DEG C., preferably 1400-1500 DEG C., and at atmospheric pressure. The boron carbide may have a formula from B2.65C to B5C, and the Al preferably has an oxide content below 5%. The amount of Al used may be 2-3 times that which will react, and the product may be leached with mineral acid, e.g. HCl, to remove excess Al, and any Al carbide. The inert atmosphere may be a current of H2 or Ar, and should not contain CO.
