Abstract
1,070,068. Electromagnets. VITRAMON Inc. Aug. 4, 1964 [Jan. 8, 1964], No. 31241/64. Heading H1P. An electromagnetic actuator 10 for an instrumentality having an operator 11, preferably non-magnetic, movable through a predetermined distance and normally urged to a predetermined position, comprises a wound coil 12 substantially enclosed by a readily magnetizable housing 18 comprising a sleeve 26 and a bushing 22 extending into the coil from opposite ends thereof and terminating adjacent but spaced from each other to define a flux path linking the coil and having an air gap within the coil, an armature 27 which upon energization of the-coil is slidable in a sleeve bore towards the bushing 22 which provides a positive stop determining the extent of forward movement, and within the sleeve 26 a stop 28, preferably non- magnetic, adjustable to determine the retracted position of the armature and relating the armature movement to the operator predetermined distance. The coil is shown having a bobbin 13 . . . 15 but may be bobbinless, and the operator 11 and armature 27 altematively may be a single unit. The armature shown has a plastic, rubber, or other non-magnetic buffer layer 30 to prevent sticking, which in a modification, Fig. 4, comprises a flexible diaphragm (31) secured to the bushing and sealing the air gap.
