Abstract

Novel 17b - hydroxy - 17a - ethynyl - 13b -ethyl - gona - 4,9,11 - triene - 3 - one is obtained by subjecting a 3-oximido-17b -hydroxy-17a -ethynyl - 13b - ethyl - gona - 4,9,11 - triene to acid hydrolysis to liberate the ketone function at the 3-position and form the desired 17b -hydroxy - 17a - ethynyl - 13b - ethyl - gona-4,9,11 - triene - 3 - one. The starting 3-oximido compound is obtained by reacting 17b -hydroxy - 13b - ethyl - gona - 4,9,11 - triene-3-one with hydroxylamine or an alkyl ether thereof to form 3-oximido-17b -hydroxy-13b -ethyl - gona - 4,9,11 - triene, oxidizing the latter to form the corresponding 3-oximido-17b - hydroxy - 13b - ethyl - gona - 4,9,11-triene and reacting the latter with an ethynyl metallic derivative. Pharmaceutical compositions having progestomimetic activity, and containing the above compound, are administered orally, parenterally or rectally.
