Abstract
1,069,272. Pile driving and withdrawal. TAYLOR-WOODROW CONSTRUCTION Ltd. Sept. 21, 1964 [Sept. 25, 1963], No. 37814/ 63. Heading E1H. A method and apparatus for transmitting forces to e.g. a pile comprises bolting at least one element 1A to the pile 2 by at least one bolt 3, the bolt being of smaller cross-section than that of the aperture in at least the element or the pile to leave a clearance round the bolt whereby forces applied to the element are transmitted to the pile solely by frictional engagement. As shown, the elements are steel plates which are arranged between legs 17 of a fork 5. At the upper end of the space between the legs 17 there is a thrust cap 7 which is mounted to be capable of limited rotary or angular movement. For driving pile 2, the force is applied through the cap 7, plates 1A and frictionally between plates 1A and the pile. For withdrawing pile 2, a pin 6 and a pad 10 are arranged in holes 8 in the plates. A spring 19 urges pin 6 against stop 20. A lever (Fig. 1 not shown) may withdraw the pin 6 to its inoperative position clear of holes 8. The mating faces of pad 10 and pin 6 are arranged to allow angular movement one relative to the other. In operation, the pad 10 will bear against faces 15 of the plates to transmit the withdrawing force to the plates.
