Abstract

1,068,993. Straps and bands. PAUL HELLERMANN G.m.b.H. April 24, 1964 [April 26, 1963], No. 17165/64. Heading A4X. [Also in Divisions B3, B6 and F2] Groups of cables are bound by a strap, the ends of which are then passed into a slot in a clasp and secured by a pin inserted through bores communicating with the slot. Various forms of clasp are shown in Figs. 2-13. In Fig. 2, a sharp pin 7 penetrates the strip ends 5, 6, after being forced through the body 4 of the clasp. In Fig. 3, the pin 9 passes through a preformed bore. In Fig. 4, the strip is not penetrated, but it drawn at 15 into the upper bore, which is dished at 20. As shown in Fig. 9, insertion of the pin by a punch 23 against a member 24 results in deformation of the pin at 25 and 26 to fill the available space. In Fig. 6, the pin 12 is integral with the body, bridge portions 21 being broken by the punching. Each clasp may have two pairs of bores, Fig. 10, and a plurality of clasps can be attached into strip-form by early rupturable bridge portions, Fig. 11. Fig. 12 shows a strip integral with the clasp. Fig. 13 shows a clasp 4 having an integral pin 16 insertable by compressing the opposite sides of the body together. The strip and clasp may be plastic or metal. Tools. A tool for securing the strap ends in the clasp is illustrated in Figs. 14-22. The tool includes a body 27, a fixed hand lever 28, a pivoted hand lever 29, a roll 30 of strip material and a channel 46 leading from the roll vicinity to a window 34 for receiving a clasp from a magazine 36 which can be pivoted to the operative position of Fig. 19, a spring 96, Fig. 15, tending to urge the clasps into the window. Below the window is a sleeve 40 accommodating a punch 44. The lever 29 can be selectively connected to levers 72, 74 by pressing in knobs 84, 85, Fig. 17. In operation, with the magazine in operative position, the sleeve is lowered by lever 72, thereby pivoting a lever 101, Fig. 20, to release a catch 98 and allow a clasp to enter the window, and moving a catch 57 normally extending through an opening 54 into the channel 46 into inoperative position to the right. This movement also pushes a rod 51, a shoulder on which is engaged by a latch 61 to prevent return of the rod and catch 57 when the sleeve is raised. The sleeve is then raised, retaining the clasp by receiving its integral pin in the bore of the sleeve, and the magazine pivoted to the position of Fig. 14. Movement of the rod has released a pawl 49 to allow rotation of the roll, and the strip is passed through the channel, round the cables 1, Fig. 22, and back into the channel until it opens the latch 61, whereupon the pawl 49 is re-engaged and the catch 57 grips the end of the strip, which is tensioned by rotating a knob 31. The punch is then operated by the lever 74, and retracted, after which the sleeve is again lowered, a knife edge 75 severing the ends of the strip. Alternatively, a strip tensioning drive could be selectively connectable to the lever 29. Separate hand levers could be used for the various functions. In another form, the window 34 may open into the magazine in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the drawing in Fig. 20, no clasp retaining device being provided, in which the clasps are connected together in the magazine by their faces into which the slots do not open. Where separate pins are used, a pin magazine is provided in the tool, and the pins may be in the form of a wire from which sequence lengths are cut.
