Be it known that I, ANTHONYVANDER- YELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Handling Belt-Staples; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relates to an appliance for containing a quantity of belt hooks or staples and by means of which said staples may be inserted one at a time in the slots of a slotted holder which forms a part of a tool for aflixing the staples in spaced apart relation to the end of a belt. Heretofore it has been customary to either place the staples by hand one at a time in said holder or to attach the staples in proper spaced apart relation to a card or similar mount whereby the staples may be placed in the slotted holder by transferring the mount with attached staples to the tool. The former method is objectional by reason of the amount of time which is consumed while in the latter the card must necessarily be formed of some material such as paper or the like which may be easily cut to obtain a required number of staples to be placed in the slot-ted holder at any time, the card, being easily broken and destroyed and a considerable number of the staples rendered useless and wasted so far as belt attaching value is concerned. It is the object and purpose of my invention to provide a device for very readily inserting the staples in the slotted holder, as few or as many as may be desired, and at the same time provide an appliance in which none of the staples are lost or in any manner made us less for belt connecting purposes. Further objects and purposes of the invention consist in many novel features of construction and operation and arrangement of parts for practically attaining this end in a simple and efficient manner and in the production of a tool for this purpose which may be produced at a low cost of manufacture. I have embodied my invention in a device which is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dc vice shown in use in connection with a well known construction of tool used for attaching belt staples to the ends of belts.
Fig. 2 is a full size side elevation of the device.
Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, are end elevations from opposite ends of the construction shown in Fig. 2.

Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the construction of the staple handling appliance a bar 1 of metal is provided which at one end has a section 2 integral therewith and turned at right angles to the length of the bar. At each side of the section 2 blocks 3 and 4 of metal are placed. A trough-like housing 5 of sheet metal formed with a curved central portion and diverging sides lies lengthwise of the bar 1 being spaced a short distance therefrom and at one end has spaced apart extensions 6 which cover the outer faces of blocks 3 and 4 heretofore described. A member formed of sheet metal and having sides 7 and S positioned at right angles to each other is placed so that the side 7 covers the front edges of blocks 3 and 4; and the section 2 while the side 8 lies over the section 6 adjacent the block 3. The side 8 is extended downwardly and inwardly at an angle as shown at 9, part 9 paralleling the adjacent side of the housing 5. Bolts 10 are passed through the blocks 3 and land the section 2, sections 6 and through the side 8 of the member heretofore described thereby binding them together and holding them in fixed relation with respect to each other.
The trough-like housing 5 is adapted to receive a plurality of wire belt staples 11 of the well known Webb type such staples each having a curved central bight with diverging legs extending in the same direction from the bight and attaching prongs turned lnwardly toward each other from the free ends of the legs. These staples are adapted to pass over the bar 1. moving freely between such bars and the sides of the housing 5. A follower 12 also trough-like in form is made from sheet metal and lies between the bar 1 and the housing 5, it hav ing a projection 13 at its rear end to which may be attached one end of a coil tension spring 14. The opposite end of the spring is fastened to a pin 15 secured in any suit-- able manner to the forward end ofbar 1 substantially at its juncture with the section 2 thereof. This spring under tension serves to press the staples 11 forward so that the attaching prongs and adjacent ends of the legs of the foremost staple in the device bear against the lower end of the side 7 which terminates a short distance above the bight of said staple. The bight of the forward staple is pressed against the lower inturned end 16 of a lever 17 pivotally mounted upon an ear 18 integral with and turned forward from the side 7 heretofore described. Such side 7 also has a depending tab 19 directly underneath which the end 16 of lever 17 is adapted to pass to engage with the bight of the foremost staple in the appliance.
On the side of the appliance opposite the part 8 a feed slide 20 is mounted, it having a slot 21 therein through which passes one of the bolts 10 the movement of the slide being controlled in amount by said bolt and slot. The slide is turned at its upper end to form a right angular extension 22 which lies over and a distance above the upper ends of blocks 3 and 4 and the extension 2. Depending from part 22 is a plunger 23 which at its lower end is narrowed to form an ejecting finger 24. The plunger is. guided betweenblocks 3 and 4 at the sides and between parts 2 and 7 at the rear and front, the extension 2 being cut away sufficlently to permit the up and down movements of the plunger. The plunger is held normally in upper position by spring 25 which is placed around the plunger and interposed between the extension 22. and the upper ends of blocks 3 and 4 as best shown in Fig. -5. The forward edge of the slide 20 has a bearing edge 26 directly above which is a similar edge 27 located in a plane slightly back of the edge 26. The upper rearwardly turned end 28 of the lever 17 is adapted to hear in its normal upper position against the edge 26 whereby the lower end 16 of lever 17 is forced against the bight of the foremost staple; but upon downward movement of the slide the end 28 is permitted to move slightly to the rear and against the hearing edge 27 the lower end 16 of the lever moving out wardly and permitting the foremost staple to occupy a position with its bight directly under the ejecting finger 24.
An inclined cam 29 is formed at the opposite edge of slide 20 against which the upper rounded end 30 of a lever 31 bears, this lever being pivoted between its ends to the ad jacent side ,6. Its upper end is normally drawn against the cam 29 by a spring 32 which at one end is connected to a pin on the lever and at its opposite end to an car 33 turned from the side 6 as shown. The lower end of lever 31 is bent, as shown at 34, substantially parallel to the adjacent side of the trough-like housing 5 and a lever 35 is pivotally connected to the lower end of lever 31 and at its forward end formed with a dog 36. At'its. rear end it is bent at 37 as indicated tothe rear of lever 31 to provide an ea for attachment of one end of the coil spring 38v which at its opposite end is secured to a pin mounted upon the lever 31 whereby said lever 35 is held from aimless movement with respect to the lever 31.
In practice this appliance is adapted to eject staples one at a time and properly position them in a staple attaching tool for belts. A well known form of tool of this character of the type shown in United States Patent No. 1,012,614, is shown in Fig. 1 ineluding a base 39 on which two bars'40 and 41 are secured, the former being slotted to provide a plurality of spaced apart tongues 42 between which the belt staples are to be entered. The bar 41 has an inclined surface and my device is adapted to be laid against this surface, the part 9 sliding thereover and with the curved section of the troughdike housing 5 resting against the forward edges of the tongues 42. When so positioned dog tion the operator may exert force with the thumbiof the left hand to move the ejector slide20 toward bar 40. lVith the beginning of the movement of the ejector slide lever 17 is released sufficiently to permit the forward movement of the foremost staple in the appliance into. alinement, with the ejecting finger 24,. the spring14jmoving the staple as soon as the end 16 of lever 17 is released. At the, same time. lever 31 is operated. As the. dog 36 of lever 35 is engaged against a tongue 42 the result is that the appliance as a whole is moved one step to the rear along bar 40. As this movement is completed the ejecting finger 24 engages with the foremost staple and with the completion of the clownward movement of the ejector slide a staple is carried into. a slot between two of the tongues in front of the lever 35. With the release of the ejector slide spring 25 returns it to normal position permitting lever 31 to take its normal position under the influ' once of spring 32 whereupon'the dog 36 on lever moves rearwardly one space and occupies the slot one space to the rear of that which it previously occupied. The opera tion may be repeated indefinitely and as many staples as required placed in succession in consecutive slots in the bar 40. For convenience I have formed a scale 4C3at one side ofthe housing 5 and by applying a belt end to this scale an operator may know at a glance how many staples to transfer to the attaching tool. In this connection itmay also be notedthat when a belt staple is passed from the device to a position between two of the tongues 42 the lower leg of the staple which lies against the surface of the block ll is immediately infront of the forward edge of the part 9 and it is therefore impossible to move'the appliance forward against this staple. An attempted entrance of a second staple into a particular slot which has received a staple cannot take place and furthermore if at any time a failure to enter a staple into a slot should occur the tool can be immediately positioned for; this slot by pressing the forward edge of the part 9 against the leg of the staple which is in the slot immediately ahead of the one to be l Vith a device of the character described a plurality of belt holding staples may be entered between the bar 1- and the housing 5 and be held and protected absolutely from loss. The staples can be supplied to the attaching tool very quickly and easily and after they are placed in the tool there is no necessity for removal of any card or other mount from the staples as is now almost universally necessary. The tool is of simple construction and may be manufactured at a very low cost. Changes in construction may be resorted to without departing from my in vention defined inthe appended claims and I accordingly do not wish to be limited to the exact structure shown, but consider myself entitled to all modifications falling within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: a
1. In a device of the character described, a bar having a right angular extension at one end, a block at each side of the extension, a trough-like housing positioned lengthwise of and spaced from the bar, sides extended at right angles from said housing at one end and passing alongside the blocks means securing said sides,blocks and extension together, a spring operated follower located between the bar and housing, a plate slidably mounted on one of said sides of the housing, a plunger connected to the plate and positioned in front of the extension to said bar, an ejecting finger at the end of the plunger, a plate covering the front edges of the blocks and said extension, said plate terminating short of thebend in the housing, and a lever pivotally mounted on the plate and having one end positioned directly in front of the opening between the bar and housing and the other end engaged with an edge of the slidably mounted plate.

A device of the character described comprising, a trough-like container for belt staples each formed with a central curved bight and with diverging arms terminating in attaching prongs extending from the bight, ejecting mechanism for ejecting the staples from thecontainerone at a time to a holder having spaced slots for receiving thestaples, and means on the device operated by the ejecting mechanism for engaging with said slotted holder to move the device step by step along said holder with successive operations ofthe ejecting mechanism.

A device of the character described comprising, a container for receiving a quantity of belt staples, an ejecting mechanism for ejecting the staples one at a time, and adapted to deliver them to a holder having spaced tongues separated by slots for receiving the staples, and means on the device operated by the movement of the ejecting mechanism for engaging with the tongues of said holder to move the device step by step along the length of said holder with successive operations of the ejecting mechanism.

A device of the characterdescribed adapted to be applied to a slotted staple holder, said device including means for re ceiving a quantity of belt staples, an ejecting means manually operable toward the slotted holder for ejecting staplesonc at a time from the device to said holder, a lever pivotally mounted on the device and having one end bearingagainst an element of the ejecting means and operable thereby, and means mounted on the opposite end of the lever adapted to engage with the slotted holder to move the device lengthwise thereof step by step with successive operations of the ejecting means.

A device of the characterl described adapted to be applied to a slotted staple holder, said device including a container for a quantity of belt staples, a manually operable ejecting means mounted at oneend of the containerfor ejecting staples from the container one at a time to the slotted holder, means for movingthe staples in the container into position tobe ejected by the ejecting means, means on the device to engage with the slotted holder, and means operated with the ejecting movement of the ejecting means for actuating said holder ongaging means to move the device one step equal to the distance between successive slots with each operation of the ejecting.

A device adapted to insert belt staples into the slots of a slotted staple holder, comprising a container for a quantity of belt staples, an ejecting means for ejecting staples from the container, means for moving the device with reference to the slotted staple holder step by step as the staples are ejected to place them successively in the slots adapted to receive them, and means for operating said moving means during the initial portion of the movement of the ej ecting means.

A device adapted to insert belt staples into the slots of a slotted staple holder, comprising a container for a quantity of belt staples, ejecting mechanism for ejecting staples one at a time from the container, and means operated by the ejecting mechanism for moving the device with reference to the slotted holder step by step as the staples are ejected to place them successively in the slots adapted to receive them.

A device adapted to insert belt staples into the slots of a slotted staple holder, comprising a container for a quantity of belt staples, an ejecting mechanism including a plunger for ejecting staples one at a time from the container, a cam plate associated plunger for ejecting staples one at a time from the container, a cam plate associated and movable therewith, a lever pivotally mounted on the device and having one end engaged against one edge of the cam plate, a dog mounted on the lever for engaging with the slotted holder to move the device along said slotted holder step by step with successive operations of the ejecting mechanism, and a second lever pivotally mounted on the device and having one end engaging against the opposite edge of the cam plate and the other end turned under the end of the plunger to hold the staples against accidental displacement from the container, substantially as described.
