In order to reduce energy losses in the draft tube at "off design" runner speeds in a Francis hydraulic turbine having runner blades 7 extending between an inner hub 5 and an outer ring 6, the free width (a 2 ), Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), between the outlet edges 9 of adjacent blades 7, (7') increases continuously from a zone m midway between the hub 5 and the ring 6 to a point i at the hub. The width (a 21 ) at i is between 10 and 50% greater than the width((a 2m ) at m, preferably 30% greater. Between zone mand point a at the outer ring 6 the width (a 2 ) may increase or decrease continuously or may remain constant. The runner axis is represented at 8.
