Abstract
In an electrolytic alumina reduction cell comprising a pot shell 11 and lining 12 separated by an insulating layer 16, a cathode collector bar passes through the base of the cell, which collector bar comprises a stem portion 15 terminating within the cell lining 12 adjacent the upper surface thereof and having a socket in its terminal end and a cap portion of R.H.M., 14, supported in <PICT:1068802/C6-C7/1> said socket to contact the pad of molten aluminium when the cell is in operation, the space between the stem portion being at least partially filled by a deformable metallic material 17 which directly joins the stem and cap portions and is softer than the cap portion under the operating conditions of the cell, thereby providing a resilient connection therebetween to accommodate differences in thermal expansion of the cap and stem portions. The deformable material may comprise tin, zinc, copper, lead, silver or aluminium or an alloy thereof and may be molten at the operating temperature. The stem portion may be of iron and the deformable material of tin. The deformable material may be protected by a refractory protective element (28) Fig.2 (not shown)
