Abstract
<PICT:1068803/C6-C7/1> In an electrolytic alumina reduction cell having a pot shell and pot lining to contain the bath constituents, the cathode structure comprises a stem portion 18, of copper or aluminium and a cap portion 19, of refractory hard metal abutting against the stem portion, the side wall of the cap portion adjacent to the stem portion being surrounded by a sheath element 20 which lies within the shell lining, the end of the R.H.M. distant from the stem portion being, when the cell is in operation, in contact with the molten aluminium within the cell. In one form the stem portion is of copper, the cap portion being positioned within a socket formed in the stem portion, the side wall of the socket constituting the sheath element Fig.2 (not shown). Using an aluminium stem portion, the aluminium may be sweated to, and enclose particles of, the refractory hard metal.
