Abstract
1,068,763. Making heat exchangers. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 2, 1963 [Dec. 20, 1962], No. 47535/63. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F4] A succession of heat exchange plate elements interconnected by ties 23, 25 is produced by pressing and stamping operations on a thin metal strip, and the strip is then folded so that adjacent plate elements are face-toface, the final arrangement comprising a stack of hollow plates 12, each formed by two adjacent complementary elements 14, 16, and each having two dished-out end chambers interconnected by relatively narrow fluid passages (defined by pressed out ribs 15). The drawing shows successive stages in the formation of the plate elements from the strip stock (see also Fig. 3, not shown). Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown), illustrate alternative forms of the ties. Successive operations on the strip as described (see also Fig. 4, not shown), comprise: (i) stamping rough cut blanks in pairs connected by webs 23, adjacent pairs being joined by webs 25; (ii) forming the concave or dished portions 14a, 16a; (iii) enlarging small apertures 20a, 21a formed previously in the blanks, to provide apertures 21; and forming flanges 20 thereon in alternate plates; (iv) trimming to remove burrs and surplus metal; (v) cleaning and preparation for bonding; (vi) folding (this latter step may include the insertion, if desired, of secondary surface heat transfer elements f); (vii) bonding (e.g. by brazing). The heat exchange elements may be made of aluminium or aluminium alloy bonded by an aluminium silicon brazing alloy.
