Abstract
1282724 Making hydraulic couplings BORGWARNER Ltd 17 Sept 1969 45935/69 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] The blading of an hydraulic torque converter, e.g. for the impeller, is formed as a corrugated annulus 12 defining V-section flow channels 13, 14 between inner and outer semi-toroidal shells. The blading may be formed by stamping, pressing or by a rolling die from a single metal strip or from a number of segments. The strip is first bent or coiled to form a conical or helical annular element and its ends are welded together. The annulus is then trimmed and flattened and then forming rolls crimp the annulus to provide the V-section walls 15, 16. The blading is then sized in a die and attached by spot welding or brazing to the inner shell in a holding jig. The whole is then welded to the outer shell. Alternatively, the blading and inner and outer shells may be assembled in a clamping jig after copper plating the contacting surfaces to be welded or brazed, and inserted in a brazing furnace. Again, when formed from separate segments, the segments are welded together between the inner and outer shells. Reference, has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,172,021.
