Abstract

1,068,664. Safety harness. A. F. SPRANGER. Nov. 9, 1963, No. 44323/63. Heading A3V. A retractable safety belt comprises a coil of plastic-coated or fabric-covered spring steel one end of which is fixed to a stud 32 mounted on a panel 24 secured to the frame of a vehicle seat and the other end guided round a roller 50 and through a grommet 52 in the surface of the seat to be secured to e.g. a similar belt. When retracted by its own resilience the belt is coiled loosely round the stud 32, the coil tightening when the belt end 58 or 54 is pulled. Two belts are secured by hook and eye means, the hook on end 54 and a table (62) (Fig. 3 not shown) on the end 58 preventing the belt ends from being retracted through the grommets which in an alternative embodiment are in the side of the seat. In a further embodiment each belt is mounted in a housing independent of the seat.
