Abstract
1,060,974. Safety harnesses. H. VON UBISCH, B. ODELGARD and E. NESSE. March 6, 1964 [March 6, 1963], No. 9549/64. Heading A3V. [Also in Division F2] A seat safety belt shock absorber comprises shock damping means in the form of a coiled element of substantially non-resilient strip material which is adapted to be connected to the safety belt at one of its fixation points and which, when unwound by shock retardation forces exceeding a predetermined minimum value, is straightened out with plastic deformation to allow the effective length of the safety belt to increase continuously and at the same time to dampen the shock. One end of a coil of rigid metal strip 5 is attached to an end of the vehicle safety belt 8 and passes through a slot 4 in a mounting 1 secured to a vehicle or through a slot in the vehicle body. The width of the metal strip increases towards the inner end of the coil. At a predetermined retardation the metal strip is drawn through the slot and permanently straightened. Alternatively two metal strips superimposed one on the other and secured to the vehicle are wound into separate coils and the external free ends are welded together and secured to the safety belt.
