Abstract

1,068,155. Building structures and structural members; portable bridges. S. HOWELL, and N. JOHNSON. Oct. 1, 1964 [July 2, 1963], No. 26159/63. Headings E1G, E1K and E1W. A structural member which may be transported in collapsed condition, is constructed in the form of a lazy tongs linkage in which the end-pivots 12 are offset from the longitudinal centres of the linkage elements 32, 32a and the ends of the elements are shaped, for example scarfed, so that when the member is fully extended, the longitudinal edges 33 of the elements are aligned to form a substantially contiguous or unbroken surface. In the exemplified embodiment roofing panels 36 extend between elements 32a, 32b of a pair of structural members to form a composite roofing panel of curved form. The member may be secured in extended condition by shear pins or bolts 46a. The composite roofing panel may be erected between posts 43, 44 with the aid of the lorry 42 Fig. 5 which serves to transport the panel to the site. The linkage elements may be tapered, Fig. 7 not shown, or may be straight rectangular strips, Fig. 1 not shown. The invention is stated to have application to a wall, ceiling girder, beam, pillar, post, floor, roof, partition, bridge, ramp, stairs or like structure. The structural member may comprise wood, metal, plastics of prestressed concrete.
