Abstract
In a suspension polymerization process, a mixture consisting essentially of methyl methacrylate and a -methyl styrene and a vinyl polymerization catalyst which is monomer soluble and water insoluble is suspended in an aqueous medium containing a water-soluble polymeric suspending agent of formula comprising the recurring structural unit <FORM:1068135/C3/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl and Z is hydroxyl or carboxyl, and the monomer mixture is polymerized at 60 DEG to 150 DEG C. for one to eight days, while maintaining the reaction medium at a pH of 5 to 9. Other monomers e.g. acrylonitrile, acrylamide, maleic acid, ethyl acrylate, decyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl fluoride and vinylidene chloride may be included in the monomer mixture. The suspending agent is e.g. polyvinyl alcohol derived from polyvinyl acetate at least 80% hydrolyzed, polymethacrylic acid or polyacrylic acid. Peroxide, persulfate or azonitrile catalysts may be used, cyclohexanone peroxide being preferred. Others specified are tertiary butyl peracetate, ditertiary butyl diperphthalate, tertiary butyl perbenzoate and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. Additional catalysts with different half-lives may be used e.g. benzoyl, lauroyl or caprylyl peroxide or azo-bis (isobutyronitrile) for use as the temperature is raised to 90 DEG C., and dicumyl peroxide or ditertiary butyl peroxide for the final stage, when the temperature may be raised to 150 DEG C. Buffers may be required to maintain the pH at 5 to 9, e.g. Na2HPO4, NaHPO4, Na3PO2, K2HPO4, KH2PO4 or K2CO3. Examples are given of the production of methyl methacrylate/a - methyl styrene copolymers. Tertiary dodecyl mercaptan is used as a chain transfer agent in Examples 7 and 10. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 836,837.
