Abstract

An improved slurry polymerization process for preparing copolymers of methyl methacrylate and alpha-methylstyrene, comprising suspending in an aqueous medium (1) a vinyl monomer mixture consisting essentially of methyl methacrylate and alpha-methylstyrene, and (2) a vinyl polymerization catalyst which is soluble in monomer and essentially insoluble in water; wherein said aqueous medium contains a water soluble suspension agent having a formula comprising the repeating structural unit: ** (See formula) ** wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, and Z is hydroxyl or carboryl, and wherein said monomeric mixture is polymerized at a temperature between about 60º C and about 150º C, for a reaction period between about 1 and about 8 days.
