Abstract
1,067,422. Controlling polymerization processes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1964 [March 14, 1963], No. 10071/63. Heading B1X. In a polymerization process, monomer is fed to the reaction vessel by feeding means comprising a control device which is responsive to the temperature of reflux of monomer so that when the reflux temperature falls the monomer is fed to the reaction vessel, the supply of monomer being reduced when the reflux temperature rises and no monomer being supplied when the reflux temperature is above a predetermined value, the polymerization process being of the kind wherein only a proportion of the monomer or monomers is initially charged into the reaction vessel and the remainder is added while the polymerization proceeds under reflux at a temperature at which the monomer, or at least one of the monomers boils or forms a boiling mixture with another of the reaction constituents. In the apparatus shown, addition of monomer 6 and initiator 7 and the temperature in steam-water jacket 4 are controlled by means responsive to temperature sensing devices 14 (between reflux condenser 5 and vessel 1), 16, and 17. When the reflux temperature falls, monomer is fed in; when the rate of supply of monomer diminishes to a certain level, initiator is fed in. A booster mechanism is provided to raise the proportion of steam entering jacket 4 to complete the polymerization when all the monomer and initiator have been added.
