Abstract

[Also in Division Fl] A device for generating high-pressure gases comprises a cylinder 11 having a closed end 12 into which a gas outlet 13 is welded. The opposite end 14 is enlarged and recessed to receive a cup-shaped closure 15 held against a sealing ring 17 by an annular nut 18. The closure 15 has a hollow stem 25 housing an igniter 26, which may be fired electrically. The annular wall of cup 15 is spaced from the cylinder 11 and houses an annular charge 21 of cordite or other slow-burning explosive. Filter units 23 are placed over the charge 21. One end of a cylindrical metal wall 24 fits into the mouth of cup 15 and the other end is closed by a cover 27 within which are further filter units 28. The outlet tube 13 extends through the cover 27 and the diameter of both cover 27 and wall 24 is such that an annular space exists between these members and cylinder 11, serving to protect the cylinder 11 from the temperatures generated within the wall 24, when fuel sprayed therein through a device 31 is ignited. After charge 21 is ignited by igniter 26, the filtered gases enter the combustion chamber within wall 24 and, when a predetermined pressure and temperature is reached, fuel is sprayed in through opening 32 and ignited by the hot gases. The process becomes self-sustaining after the cordite has burnt out and the gas pressure in outlet 13 is dependent upon the rate of fuel supply. This rate may be automatically controlled by servo-means in response to pressure within the device.
