A hot metal billet 17 is provided with a lubrication coating prior to extrusion by placing it in a cradle 10 of horizontal rollers 5, 6 one at least of which is driven for rotating the billet whilst sheet lubricating material 13 such as glass fibre matting, is fed to the lip between the billet and one of the rolls. The glass fibre sheet 13 is drawn from a roll 14 by pinch rollers 11 chain-driven by a motor 8 which also drives the cradle rollers 5, 6 through chains 9, 10. A guillotine 16 severs the sheet 13 when sufficient has been wrapped around the billet and the cradle is then pivoted upwardly about the axis of roller 6 by means of a ram 18, to deposit the billet on a run-down table 20 leading to the extrusion press. Scrapers 5a, 6a prevent build-up of glass fibre on the rollers 5, 6. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the cradle 23 is connected to its ram 28 by parallel linkage 26; it is first raised vertically and upon engagement of abutments 30, 31 is pivoted upwardly. In a further embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the spacing of the cradle rollers 48, 49 is adjustable by screw 59 for accepting different sizes of billets. The operating of the mechanism may be controlled according to a predetermined programme. The rundown table may be replaced by a chain conveyer or the billet may be tipped from the cradle directly into the extrusion press.
