Abstract

1,023,657. Extruding. HENRY WIGGIN & CO. Ltd. Nov. 20, 1964 [Aug. 20, 1963], No. 32942/63. Heading B3P. Means for feeding a hot billet from a furnace to an extrusion press, comprises a run-out table 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), mounting a carriage 4 which is movable in both directions between the furnace end 2 and the press end 3 and which has an upper compartment containing means 28, 29, Fig. 3 (not shown), for supplying sheet lubricant such as glass fibre matting 24 to the table surface as the carriage moves towards the furnace end, and a lower compartment to receive and guide the hot billet as the carriage moves towards the press end. The carriage has wheels 9 running along flanges 5, 6 of the table 1 and driven by endless chains 18 actuated by a motor and reversible gearbox 20. A partition 10, Fig. 2 (not shown), divides the carriage into a lower compartment and an upper compartment containing pinch rollers 28, 29 for feeding the glass fibre 24 from a roll, along a pivoted guide 33 to the surface of the table. Pinch roller 28 is driven by a chain 55 from a free-wheel friction roll 54 running on the table flange 6 so that the pinch roller 28 only rotates as the carriage moves towards the furnace end 2. During this time the other pinch roller 29 is held in engagement by spring 53. Near the end of the carriage movement, a lever 39, Fig. 2, engages a cam surface 38 to release the pinch roller 29 and stops the feed; finally another lever 59 engages the cam surface to actuate a blade 30, Fig. 3 (not shown) and sever off the matting. The carriage is stopped by a limit switch 22 actuated by a shoe 23. A hot billet is then pushed by a ram through a trip gate 11 into the lower compartment of the carriage which then moves towards the press end where the slope of the table increases so that the billet leaves the carriage and rolls towards the press. The carriage is stopped by another limit switch 21.
