Abstract

1,066,435. Laminates. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 3, 1963 [Dec. 11, 1962; Sept. 18, 1963], Nos. 46640/62 and 36668/63. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B8] A conveyer belt segment comprises a reinforcement imbedded in a flexible material and has at each end a transverse bead supported by a neck extending from the end of the segment in the plane of the segment. Figs. 1, 2 show a belt segment 1 with a bead of steel wires la, 1b enclosed by steel cords 2 whose ends 3, 4 extend a short distance into the segment 1 and enclose the ends 5, 6 of two reinforcement plies 7, 8 of steel wire. The segment 1, including the bead, has a covering of vulcanized rubber composition 10. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which steel cords 16 enclosing a bead wire 15 have ends 17, 18 enclosed by reinforcement layers 21, 22 of steel cords 23. Figs. 5, 6 show a belt segment with a bead wire 30 of cabled steel wires 30a, 30b enclosed by an endless band 31 of steel cords 32 forming two reinforcement layers 33, 34. Fig. 7 shows a belt segment wherein a bead wire 40 enclosed by steel cords 41 is provided with a strip 47 of open-woven nylon fabric to form a chafer strip which is covered by a protective sheath 51 of polypropylene. Fig. 9 shows a connecting member 60 formed of steel portions 67 bonded to rubber portions 68 by an isocyanate composition. The cords forming the reinforcement plies are disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the segment or at a bias angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of up to 40 degrees.
