Natural or synthetic moulding sands having a quartz sand base with conventional binders have added to them, separately or premixed, a carbonaceous substance with a softening index, as defined in the Specification, of between 0À2 and 0À7 and a further carbonaceous substance which has more than 50% volatile components, e.g. brown coal, peat, sawdust. The first carbonaceous substance may be a mixture of coal dust and bitumen.
