Abstract

Coal particles from a hopper 21 are gasified in a fluidized bed 19 with steam fed in at 27. Agglomerated ash particles from the combustion of carbonaceous fuel in fluidized bed 9 pass into the gasification bed 19 and downwardly through it. Some of the ash from the bed 19 is recycled to the combustion bed 9, which is operated at such a temperature that the fuel burns instantly on entering the bed, and the ash particles agglomerate without defluidization.
