Abstract

High molecular weight organic polymers are rendered resistant to electrostatic charge by incorporation of a substituted dicarboxylic acid amide of formula <FORM:1066017/C3/1> where R1 is H, an alkyl, C1- 26 alkenyl, aryl, arylalkyl or alkylaryl radical, or a metal or ammonium ion; R2 is H or CH3; R3 is a C2- 26 alkyl radical; R4 is an alkylene or alkenylene radical; and R1, R3 and R4 may also contain hydroxy or alkoxy groups. The polymers may be polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene glycolterephthalate, polycarbonate, polyoxymethylene, polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, polyacetate, polyvinyl acetal, polyamide, polyurethane, an epoxide resin or a polyester derived from ethylene glycol/maleic anhydride/phthalic anhydride and hardened with styrene. 0.1-7% of the amide may be used which may be malonic acid N-methylstearylamide (methyl, ethyl or butyl) ester, malonic acid N-methyldodecylamide zinc salt, succinic acid N-methylstearylamide ethyl ester, glutaric acid N-dodecylamide ethyl ester, adipic acid N-methyldodecylamide stearyl ester, adipic acid N-stearylamide phenyl ester, pimelic acid N-methyl-stearylamide ethyl ester, traumatic acid N-methylstearylamide ethyl ester or maleic acid mono-N-(stearyl or methylstearyl) amide.
