Abstract

Organic polymers of high molecular weight are rendered resistant to electrostatic change by homogeneously incorporating in the polymer, e.g. 0.1-7% of at least one substituted fatty acid amide of formula <FORM:1070793/C3/1> where R1 is a C1- 26 alkyl or alkenyl radical or a cycloalkyl radical, R2 is H or CH3, R3 is a C2- 26 alkyl radical and R1 and R3 may be substituted by hydroxy or alkoxy groups. The polymer may be low- or high-pressure polyethylene, polystyrene, an acrylonitrile or butadiene/styrene copolymer, polyactylonitrile, polypropylene, a polyamide, a polyethylene glycol terephthalate, a polycarbonate or a hardened polyester resin produced by condensing ethylene glycol with maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride and then hardening the polyester with styrene in the presence of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, coballous naphthenate and the above amide. The amide may be acetic acid N-(dodecyl- or stearyl-) amide (acetic or propionic) acid N-methyl N-stearyl amide (butyric, lauric or stearic) acid N-methyl N-stearylamide, oxy-acetic acid N-methyl N-stearylamide, 9,10-dihydroxy-stearic acid N-methyl N-stearylamide, methoxy-acetic acid N-stearylamide or oleic acid N-dodecylamide. In comparative examples the polymers were compounded with acetic acid N-butyl N-stearylamide, acetic acid N-octyl N-dodecylamide, acetic acid N-dibutylamide, fumaric acid N-methyl N-stearylamide and oleic acid amide.
