Abstract

As a solvent or swelling agent for polyethylene terephthalate there is used a compound of formula X1-CnH2n-X2, where X1 is-COOH, -NO2, -CH2Cl, -CCl3, -COOR or <FORM:0797425/IV (a)/1> , wherein R is methyl or ethyl, n is an integer from 1 to 4 and may be 0 in the case of chlorine containing groups, and also wherein the carbon chain of the -CnH2n - group may be interrupted by oxygen. There may also be used a mixture of one of the above-mentioned swelling agents or solvents with (a) another of the above-mentioned swelling agents or solvents; (b) a swelling agent or solvent not falling within the above formula; or (c) a non-solvent. Specific compounds and mixtures mentioned are (1) diethyl malonate; (2) diethyl malonate and diethyl fumarate; (3) diethyl succinate; (4) dimethyl succinate; (5) dimethyl succinate and dimethyl adipate; (6) diethyl glutarate; (7) diethyl adipate; (8) trichloroethanol; (9) trichloroethanol and butanol; (10) 2-nitropropanol; (11) chloroacetic acid; (12) chloroacetic acid and acetic acid; (13) chloroacetic acid and maleic anhydride; (14) chloroacetic acid and diethyl oxalate; (15) chloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid; (16) trichloroacetic acid; (17) trichloroacetic acid and glycollic acid; (18) ethyl chloroacetate; (19) acetonyl acetone; (20) dimethyl diglycollate; (21) beta-chloropropionic acid; (22) beta-beta-beta-trichloro-tertiary butanol.
