Abstract

In an example, 1-oxa-4-(21-dydroxyethyl)-4-azaspiro [4,5] decane is prepared by heating diethanolamine with cyclohexanone in the presence of benzene.ALSO:Polymers of N-acryloxyalkyl-oxazolidine and N - acryloxyalkyl - tetrahydro - 1,3 - oxazine compounds are prepared by mixing a polymer reactant (I), consisting of a homopolymer or copolymer of an ester of acrylic acid and a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, with an N-hydroxy-alkyl compound (II) of the formula <FORM:0989050/C3/1> where m is 2 or 3, n is 4 or 5, and R4 is an alkylene group, preferably ethylene or propylene, containing from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and heating the mixture to cause transesterification of polymer I with compound II. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. xylene, benzene or toluene, but may also be effected in bulk. A catalyst may also be present, e.g. tetraisopropyl titanate, tetra-n-butyl titanate, di-n-butyl tin oxide or an alkali metal alkoxide. The reactant I may be a copolymer of the acrylic acid ester with an ester of an acid of the formula <FORM:0989050/C3/2> where R3 is methyl, ethyl, chlorine or phenyl, and an aliphatic alcohol as defined above. Examples describe the transesterification of (a) poly(ethyl acrylate) and (b) an ethylacrylate (methyl methacrylate copolymer with 1 - oxa - 4 - (21 - hydroxyethyl) - 4 - azaspiro [4.5] decane, the respective products being (a) a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and 1-oxa-4-(21 - acryloxyethyl) - 4 - azaspiro [4.5] decane and (b) a terpolymer of ethylacrylate, methyl methacrylate and 1-oxa-4-(21-acryloxyethyl)-4-azaspiro [4.5] decane. The transesterification products are useful as film-formers in adhesives, sealers, and coating and impregnating compositions for application to metals, wood, plastics, textiles and leather.
