Abstract
A finely divided catalyist for the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen is carried on a membrane of paper, cardboard, synthetic resin, woven or non woven fabric which may be incorporated in a hermetically sealed container into which hydrogen is introduced prior to sealing to react with the oxygen present. The catalyist may be selected from palladium, platinum, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, and osmium, and may be attached to the membrane by a permanently tacky or pressure sensitive coating applied to the membrane, in which case the catalyst may be carried by a finely divided support material, such as carbon, alumine, silica, or calcium carbonate. The membrane may be sandwiched between two outer layers to which it is bonded in a discontinuous manner, for example by heat sealable resin pre applied to the layers, which may be of paper, woven or non woven fabric, or synthetic resin. Alternatively, if the membrane is absorbent, the catalyst may be applied as an aqueous solution, the water dried out, and the membrane subjected to reduction to form the catalytic metal. The device may be inserted in the can before or after the food or other product, or may be secured to the can end, or may be secured at the edges to form a diaphragm.ALSO:A finely divided catalyst for the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen is carried on a membrane of paper, cardboard, synthetic resin, woven or non woven fabric which may be incorporated in a hermetically sealed container into which hydrogen is introduced prior to sealing to react with the oxygen present.
