Abstract

1,043,095. Packaging; coatings for containers. CATALYTIC GAS PACK Ltd. April 21, 1965 [June 3, 1964], No. 23056/64. Headings B8C and B8D. [Also in Division A2] The residual oxygen contained in the air space 8 above the contents 9 of a can is combined with hydrogen, introduced into the container before the end closure 1 is applied by means of a catalyst dispersed in a liquid vehicle with a support material and a binder and coated on the surface of a part 11 of a sealing compound 6. The catalyst may be applied to the whole of the compound 6; or an uncoated portion of the compound 6 may stop short before the wall 2 of the lid, and a coated portion of the compound, spaced from the uncoated portion, may be applied to the flange 4 and to the wall 2. Again, the compound 6 may be omitted, and replaced by a catalytic compound which also forms a seal. The support material may be carbon, alumina, silica or calcium carbonate. The catalyst may be palladium, platinum, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium or osmium. The binder may be gum tragacanth, gelatin, dextrin, gum arabic, albumin, casein, or polyvinyl acetate. The catalyst may be applied to both ends of the container, or to one end only. Where it is applied to one end only, it may be either applied to the closure or to the base of the container. Where it is applied to the base, the filling of the container takes place subsequently. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the wall 2 is formed with an inward shoulder which enables a larger area of the coated seaming compound to be exposed to the container interior. The material in the container may be beer, dried milk or a product other than food.
