Abstract

1,005,651. Packaging. CATALYTIC GAS PACK Ltd. Dec. 4, 1963 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 1460/63. Heading B8C. [Also in Division A2] A method of disposing of residual oxygen in an hermetically sealed non-permeable container consists of introducing a catalyst into the container together with a metallic hydride such as sodium borohydride capable of releasing enough hydrogen to combine with substantially the whole of the residual oxygen in the sealed container. In one embodiment a porous paper element bearing a small quantity of catalyst such as palladium may be attached to the inner surface of a can end and immediately before the can is seamed a small quantity of sodium borohydride solution is applied to the paper element. In another embodiment the same procedure is followed except that the seaming machine is fitted with a device for flushing out the headspace of the can with carbon dioxide. In further embodiments the catalyst may be adhered to the inner surface of the can and a porous paper element bearing the metallic hydride secured thereon, or the metallic hydride may be contained in a porous sachet attached to the container closure. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 890,550.
