Abstract

<PICT:1065821/C6-C7/1> A method and apparatus for continuous thermal treatment of strip material comprises passing the strip through a fluidized bed of granular material with the strip in a substantially horizontal plane, and directing a stream of gas on to the upper surface of the strip to inhibit the deposit of granular material thereon. The apparatus comprises a container 4 wherein is a bed 5 of granular material, maintained in a fluidized condition by a gas supplied to the container through an inlet conduit 6 and perforated shelf 7. Positioned above the strip 1 is a duct 13, supplied with gas under pressure via the conduit 14, the gas passing through the perforated base 15 of the duct 13 to impinge on the upper surface of the strip 1. The strip enters and leaves the container 4 by way of gland boxes 10, 11 to which high pressure gas is supplied via inlet pipes 12, thus preventing loss of fluidized material through the slits in the container by which the strip enters and leaves. The gas supplied via the conduits 6 and 14 may be recirculated. If required the fluidized bed may be heated by placing electrical heaters 16, or oil or gas burners in the fluidized bed. The fluidized bed may be divided into a number of zones, through which the strip passes consecutively, maintained at various temperatures.
