Abstract
<PICT:1065806/C6-C7/1> Hydrogen is removed from molten metal e.g. Al, Mg, Cu, Fe or their alloys including steel by causing it to flow, preferably turbulently, beneath and in intimate contact with a molten salt flux mixture, preferably comprising one or more chlorides and/or fluorides of alkali or alkaline earth metals or Mg, K3AlF6 or Na3AlF6, while maintaining the atmosphere above the flux free from H2 or H- containing substances such as water vapour, preferably by continuously flowing above the flux a stream of H2 - free dry air, N2 or pure A. As shown in Fig. 2, the molten metal may be led via inlet 11 and outlet 10 through a tank 1, fitted with a gas-tight lid (see Fig. 1), which fits into a channel 3 containing molten lead or solder seal round the tank rim, and provided with partitions 4, 5 to increase the length of flow path and baffles 6, 7 to cause turbulence, to flow beneath a molten flux layer. The tank may be crucible-shaped and connected to a launder from a melting furnace and to a casting station (see Figs. 3 to 6).
