Abstract

1,065,781. Spinning yarns. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Dec. 3, 1963 [Dec. 26, 1962, Feb. 11, 1963], No. 47632/63. Headings D1F and D1W. A high density, low bulk yarn (or tow) is composed of longitudinally extending, permanently twist-crimped fibre glass strands which are relatively movable with respect to one another, the strands consisting of filaments permanently deformed in three dimensions and intertwined and relatively movable with respect to one another. The yarn &c. is expandable, e.g. so as to fill irregularly shaped cavities, into a bulky fibrous product such as a mat which may be used for heat insulation. As shown in Fig. 1, strands 14 of glass filaments supplied from packages 12 are grouped into a tow 20 which passes through a tensioner 22, over a roller 24 (carried by a spring 26 so that it serves as a shock absorber for abrupt tension changes) around a capstan wheel 28, through a tubular furnace 30 and then through a falsetwister 32, around roller 34 and a driven, advancing roller 36 and the crimped material is wound on a package 38. The crimped yarn &c. is expanded by passage through a jet or nozzle, Figs. 2 and 5 (not shown) wherein it is subjected to a stream of air under pressure in an angular direction to the yarn &c. axis. The strands 14 may be temporarily coated with an organic binder which is thermally decomposed during the subsequent heat-treatment.
