Abstract

In a circular machine having two co-axial tubes within the needle cylinder, fabric is tensioned during knitting by offlying air suction down the outer tube, and is turned inside-out after press off by suction through the inner tube. The fabric is received in a displaceable chamber from where it is discharged by a stream of air. The take-up mechanism comprises coaxial tubes (10, 11 Fig. 8, not shown) which may be selectively connected, via a valve (40) Fig. 2 (not shown) to the intake (31) of an air supply means (30). The fabric is tensioned during knitting by air flow down the outer tube (10), and after pressing off is drawn down the inner tube (11) by the re-directed air flow, and is thus turned inside-out. The fabric is received in a chamber (45), which may constitute in an alternative embodiment (Fig. 10) the valve (40), and is discharged when the chamber is moved into registry with the air supply outlet (32). Items may be discharged to an inspection station at predetermined intervals. The fabric may be inspected through a port in the outer tube (10), and fabric prematurely pressed off may be ejected from the tube by compressed air. Severed yarn ends are removed and caught in a trap (103), Fig. 1 (not shown), through a tube (100) connected to the air supply means.
