Abstract

1,065,663. Key-operated locks. E. OPDERBECK. May 1, 1964 [May 2, 1963; Feb. 1, 1964], No. 18247/64. Heading E2A. [Also in Division F1] A key operated lock, Fig. 1, comprises a lock mechanism 1, and a key carrier slidable between a first position in which a key may be placed in the carrier, and a second position in which a key carried in the carrier is inserted in correct relation in the lock mechanism, the carrier in its second position being rotatable to cause such carried key to actuate the lock mechanism. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, the carrier is a cylinder with a relatively separable portions 5, 7, and is slidable in a cylindrical guide 2 on the front of the lock mechanism 1. In the first position, Fig. 2, the portion 7 is spring urged to a position in which it prevents sliding of the carrier and allows insertion of the key 11, 12 into the carrier. After the key has been inserted the portion 7 is pressed against the action of the springs so that projections 14 thereon enter cut-out portions in the head 12 of the key thus allowing the carrier to slide to its second position, Fig. 1, in which the key bit 11 is entered into the lock mechanism 1. Correct relationship of the key bit and the lock mechanism is assured by an idicator 10. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, the carrier is of greater length to give greater security for the lock 1. The key is inserted laterally and then axially into the carrier and is gripped by pegs 14 on the spring loaded portion 7 engaging in holes in its head 12. The key is guided into correct relationship with the lock mechanism by a rib 22 engaging in a slot in the side of the carrier. The key is rotated after insertion in the lock mechanism by rotating a knob 20. In a modification of this embodiment the carrier has a tubular extension to receive a bunch of keys secured to the key in use. The lock is described as applied to a safe in which its bolt serves to hold a safe body in a hole in a wall, or as applied to a motor vehicle wherein its bolt when in the locking position enters a recess in the steering column, and in which the lock mechanism also makes or breaks an electrical circuit.
