Abstract
Polymeric aromatic sulphides of formula Ar-(Sn-Ar)x-Sn-Ar where Ar are similar or dissimilar aromatic residues and n and x are integers, are obtained by reacting aromatic compounds with sulphur chlorides in the presence of an elemental metal catalyst. The catalyst may be a metal of Group Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIa, IIIb, IVa, IVb, Va, Vb or VIII of the Periodic Table or a lanthanide. The catalyst may be present in an amount of less than 1% by weight of the reaction mixture, and may be activated by agitation in contact with a solution of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, a carboxylic acid, an ester, an alcohol, an ether or a buffer solution (pH 4.6 to 7.2). In examples polymers are obtained by reacting anthracene and toluene with sulphur monochloride in the presence of tin and cerium catalysts.
