Abstract
In a method and apparatus for the continuous annealing of metal strip the latter is passed through a series of fluidized beds maintained at progressively increasing temperatures; it may then be cooled either by passing it through the same series of beds in the reverse direction, by passing it through a further bed or beds maintained at a low temperature, or by passing it through a liquid bath. The beds may be formed in a vessel by vertical partitions having slots through the strip may pass, or alternatively the strip may be caused by means of a roller system to pass in a vertical direction through each of the bed sections. In another embodiment the series of beds may be formed in a vertically arranged cylinder divided by diffuser plates. These various types of apparatus are illustrated. Where the strip is cooled in a liquid bath such as lead-bismuth alloy, the latter may be cooled by bringing it into heat-exchange relationship with the fluidized beds.
