Abstract

1,064,916. Fluid-pressure punches. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. July 12, 1965 [July 23, 1964], No. 29412/65. Heading B4B. A device for punching a hole in a record medium 13, Fig. 1, comprises a die 5 having an aperture 19, a bed-plate 1 having a fluid chamber 9 provided with an opening 11, a signal source 7 for supplying fluid under pressure to the chamber 9 and shaping means 3 for directing the fluid through the opening 11 and against the material 13 with a velocity that varies over the width of the aperture 19, the fluid particles of highest velocity being directed towards the periphery of the aperture. Means 31 are provided for raising and lowering the die in synchronism with the movement of the material 13 into and out of punching position. The signal source may comprise a pure fluid amplifier. Each punch may be provided with its own signal source or a plurality of punches may be simultaneously actuated from a single signal source. In a modification, Fig. 5, a fluid amplifier is disposed within bed-plate 1<SP>1</SP>, the amplifier comprising input channels 33, 35 and 37 connected to a compressor 46 and to signal sources 48 and 51, the sources 48 and 51 respectively providing a fluid signal each time a punching operation is to be terminated or initiated. The amplifier has output channels 39 and 41, the chamber 91 being formed by the downstream portion of channel 39 which has an annular opening 11<SP>1</SP>. A jet-shaping body 52 is bonded by the channels 39 and 41. The aperture 19 in the die 5 may be made smaller than the opening 11<SP>1</SP>.
