1,064,804. Wells; drilling by jet; solution ruining. J. K. HENDERSON. April 9, 1965 [April 23, 1964], No. 15080/65. Heading E1F. Apparatus for drilling a laterally extending hole from a well 20 to a well 10 comprises a drilling device 24, 26, 28 located in the well 20, a signal generating means 72 (Fig. 4 not shown) in one of the wells, a signal receiving means 16 in the other well, and means for changing the drilling direction to bring the signal generating and receiving means together, the signal generating or receiving means in the well 20 being attached to the drilling device. The drilling device comprises drill string 24, flexible part 26, and jetting head 28. The head has a single nozzle 60 (Fig. 4 not shown) and is rotated by a motor 64 to change the direction of jetting in response to the signals, the initial hole deviation being given by a whipstock 30. The means 16 may be replaced by a tubing string 130 (Fig. 6, not shown) having depending legs 116, 118 which may be caused to diverge by jets 120, 122 so that signal receiving means 124 lie on the apices of a triangle. The water issuing from the nozzle may be charged with abrassive, and the vibration of the issuing water may generate the signals. The invention may be applied to solution mining or the recovery of petroleum.
