Abstract

1481828 Boring earth &c CONTINENTAL OIL CO 8 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 48526/74 Heading E1F A second horizontal borehole 12 is drilled parallel to a first, previously drilled borehole 11 by a drilling assembly 13 which is controlled in response to signals received from a signal generating means 14 in the first borehole 11, which moves along borehole 11 at the same rate as the drilling assembly 13 progresses along borehole 12. As described the drilling assembly 13 -includes a rotary drill bit 8 driven by motor 17 and is moved along the borehole 12 by power driving means 21 and 23 including pressure feet 22, 24. As the drilling assembly 13 progresses along borehole 12 it drags a cable 16a which, through a coupled drive means (not shown) feeds out cable 16 at the same rate. Cable 16 is attached to the signal generating means 14 which includes drive means (not shown) controlled by the tension in cable 16 so that the signal generating means moves along borehole 11 at the same rate as the drill 13 moves along borehole 12. The signal generating means 14 has an antenna 15 for radiating a radio frequency signal. This signal is detected by a loop antenna 20 which forms part of a control system which controls a drill deflection unit 9 so that the spacing d, between the boreholes 11, 12 remains constant. The control system may also utilize a second loop antenna 27.
