Abstract

A lubricant composition comprises (A) a hydrocarbon thiophosphite where each hydrocarbon group has at least 3 carbon atoms, and (B) a further synthetic liquid lubricant which has at least 9 carbon atoms in hydrocarbon groups and one or more atoms of oxygen, phosphorus, sulphur or halogen. The composition may also contain a major proportion of a mineral oil. B may be selected from silicones, alkylpolyglycol ethers, dicarboxylic acid esters, hydrocarbon esters of oxyacids of phosphorus, fluorocarbons, mercaptans and hydrocarbon thiophosphates and thionophosphates. Greases may be formed by the addition of 30-70% of an alkali metal soap e.g. lithium stearate.
