Abstract

Pistons; piston packing.-In a piston for an internal-combustion engine, the packing-rings are at some distance from the hot end of the piston and are carried by a steel sleeve encircling the piston body. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve C carrying the packing-rings is screwed and riveted to an aluminium ring B, screwed and bolted to the body which also is of aluminium. Holes E allow the oil splashed up into the piston to pass to the space behind the sleeve for lubricating and cooling purposes. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the sleeve C and ring B are flanged and bolted to the body. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the sleeve H is cast in a groove in the ring M which is screwed and bolted to the body. Rings C prevent the gases passing to the back of the sleeve.
