Abstract

Methylamines are prepared by hydrogenating hydrocyanic acid in the gaseous phase under a pressure above atmospheric at a temperature below 250 DEG C. in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst of a metal of Periods 5 and 6 of Group VIII of the Periodic Table (Mendeleef) in corporated in a support. The metal, which is preferably palladium, may be used in the form of a salt and preferably provides 0.50 to 10.0% by weight of the catalyst. The support is usually a mixture of diatomaceous earth and kaolin, preferably in the ratios 0.1 : 1 to 10 : 1.
