Abstract

1,064,152. Ultrasonic probes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 31, 1964 [Nov. 2, 1962], No. 41625/62. Heading H4J. A piezo-electric transducer for ultrasonic flaw detection comprises a piezo-electric disc 11 bevelled from a flat central zone 12 of diameter d at least 3 times the thickness t towards the back surface 13 to which is cemented or moulded a cylindrical backing 14. Angle # is 4 to 20 degrees. The surface of the backing outside the feather edge runs is a smooth curve 18 of radius greater than the minimum Rayleigh wavelength into the cylindrical side 19 of the backing 14. The piezo-electric disc is of highly coupled ceramic material (i.e. material of which the mechanical/electrical strain energy ratio exceeds 0À04), e.g. barium titanate, lead titanate-zirconate or the niobates. The backing 14 is suitably of tungsten powder bound with an epoxy or polyester or phenol-formaldehyde resin.
